The Business Studies department has four full time teachers and is part of the Business and ICT faculty within the school. There is a head of department who is overseen by the head of faculty. Business is taught in computer suites where students can access a wide variety of software and applications. The school has a Business and Economics specialism which incorporates enterprise week and enterprise enrichment across the whole school.
Business Studies at Key Stage 4
Two different courses are currently taught within this Key Stage, they are BTEC Business and GCSE Business, which aspects of are taught to Year 9 students.
OCR National Level 2 Business is totally coursework based and covers a range of business topics such as, investigating business, enterprise where students get the opportunity to set up their own businesses, promotion incorporating a trip to Thorpe Park, finance, business communication and working people.
GCSE Business Communication Systems is examined by a practical assessment that covers the theory from unit 9 based on spreadsheets, databases, business documents and communication. Unit 8 is a written examination that contains a lot of theory including recruitment, business objectives, working practices, stakeholders and data systems. There is also a controlled assessment where students are required to produce a set of informational documents and analyse their qualities. This is in a controlled time limit.
Business Studies at Key Stage 5
There is a choice of three courses at Key stage 5 BTEC Courses. Level 2 covers the same units as in Key Stage 4 and level 3 covers various topics, entrepreneurs as one of them.
In collaboration with Hounslow Manor and borough level 3 Diploma is examined and requires the completion of coursework. There are many employers such as IBM, Brompton Bikes, DHL, Barclays and The Museum of London who work closely with the students to help them understand the business world. Units covered include Corporate Social Responsibility, Personal Finance, Marketing, Enterprise, Event Planning and Accounting. Functional Skills are taught as part of this course by the respective departments.
